Born to Egyptian parents, Malek grew up in a multi-ethnic neighbourhood where questions of race and identity were present from an early age. In this series of uniquely personal works, he revisits the people and places of his youth. The images are staged to purposely trap viewers in their own preconceptions and prejudices with the intention of confronting inherent biases. Malek’s work usually draws on references from cinema and mass media to instill a sense of narrative in a single frame. In Girl N Tha Hood, the reading of the works relies predominantly on the viewer’s personal relationship with the subject. As they say, the truth is in the eye of the beholder.
